SuperSport secures ICC cricket rights in Africa for eight more years

The International Cricket Council has agreed a new eight-year broadcast and digital deal with MultiChoice owned SuperSport International. The terms of the deal (2023-2031) will see all ICC global events available to fans across 52 territories in Africa.

The deal is the continuation of a partnership that has been in place since 2007. It will cover events such as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will take place on African soil in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia for the first time since 2003.

The partnership will also include all key women’s events, building on the success of the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. That event saw huge growth in terms of South Africa viewership, with an audience increase of 790% over 2020.

ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said: “We are delighted to be continuing our successful and proven partnership with SuperSport. There is a real opportunity for more fans to engage with ICC events and enjoy cricket across the 52 territories. Following the hugely successful ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 and the legacy left for women’s cricket in South Africa, I am confident this strategic partnership will play a major part in building the momentum for women’s sport in the region too.”

The South African-based broadcaster has established itself as a key platform for sports across the continent, with 22.1 million subscribers at time of writing. MultiChoice South Africa CEO, Marc Jury said: “We are delighted to have secured another deal with the ICC. We are excited to deliver ICC cricket coverage to Africa for the next few years and provide new experiences for fans across the continent.”
