Disney+ relaunches on PS5 with 4K support

Disney has announced the relaunch of the Disney+ app on PlayStation 5 consoles.

The headline feature of the relaunch is the oft-requested addition of support for 4K HDR – a feature which has long been supported by streaming apps on PS5 such as Netflix, Prime Video and HBO Max. The PS5 however does not support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for streaming content, something which may be added in a potential future ‘PS5 Pro’ hardware refresh in the coming years.

Commenting on the relaunch, Jerrell Jimerson, EVP of Product & Design, Disney Streaming, said: “A key part of our global expansion strategy is to meet consumers wherever they are, which is why we’re excited to enhance Disney+ for PlayStation 5 users. The ability to support 4K HDR video streaming on the platform will also improve the viewing experience for fans.”

Elsewhere at the mouse house, Disney has announced the appointment of Carolyn Everson to the board as part of a truce with activist investor Daniel Loeb. Loeb, whose hedge fund acquired a US$1 billion stake in the company in August, had previously requested a litany of changes at the company including the spin-off of ESPN and accelerating the full purchase of Hulu from Comcast. 

Third Point has agreed not to present any proposals at stockholder meetings until 2024, while also agreeing not to raise its stake to over 2% and vote in favour of the slate of directors nominated by Disney’s board.
