Euro 2022: 9 million tune in as England beat Sweden
England’s 4-0 demolition of Sweden was the most-watched match of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament so far in the UK.
The BBC said that there was a peak television audience of 9.3 million watching on BBC One, while two million Brits streamed the match across the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website. An average audience of 7.9 million TV viewers watched the match.
Both viewing figures were higher than England’s narrow victory over Spain in the quarter-final, which had a peak TV audience of 7.6 million and 1.5 million streams.
The other semi-final saw Germany beat France 2-1, with a peak of 4.9 million on BBC TV, and around 1 million streams on iPlayer, according to the BBC’s women’s sports lead Anna Thompson.
With England set to face Germany in the competition’s final on August 31 at a sold-out Wembley stadium it is likely that the viewership will surpass the highest peak TV audience for women’s football in the UK, which was set at 11.7 million for England’s 2019 World Cup semi-final loss to the US.
Viewership of England’s tournament has steadily increased since the opening day victory over Austria, which attracted over 4 million viewers.
