Google FCC filing suggests new Chromecast device on the way
A new FCC filing has revealed a new streaming device from Google.
Reports emerged at the beginning of the year that Google was working on a cheaper Chromecast device and now Droid-Life has spotted a filing with the Federal Communications Commission to suggest that such a device is on the way.
The device is listed as ‘Google G454V’ and is described as a ‘wireless device’ dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth LE.
Adding more credence to the idea that this is indeed a new Chromecast device is a diagram attached to the filing, which shows the device inserted into an LCD monitor and powered by a USB cable, along with a remote controller.
Supplementary ‘test case’ info also shows that it was tested streaming video at 1080p.
That second part lines up with previous reports that any new Google streaming device would be an entry-level 1080p device that could be branded as ‘Chromecast HD with Google TV’.
Google’s existing Chromecast with Google TV dongle – which supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos – currently runs at US$50, making it likely that the new device could rival Roku’s entry-level Roku Express and Amazon Fire Stick Lite which retail for US$24.99 and US$29.99 respectively.
