Smart TV market continuing to grow in Germany
The share of smart TVs and UHD TVs in Germany continues to increase.
According to Deutsche TV-Plattform, in the first nine months of 2021 around 4 million TVs were sold in the country. Of that total, 3.7 million were smart TVs that enable the use of apps or media libraries via HbbTV or the internet. This translates to a share of 93% – up 4% from the first three quarters of 2020.
The market share of UHD TVs also increased, for a total of 3 million devices. This represented 75% of all TV sales, compared to 70% for the corresponding period of 2020. The share of these UHD TVs that support HDR was at 98%, with 79% supporting dynamic HDR processes such as Dolby Vision or HDR10+.
TVs being sold in the country are also increasing in size. Displays of 55-inches and larger made up 54% of sales (2.2 million), while every fifth TV sold was at least 65-inches.
Carine Chardon, Managing Director of the Deutsche TV-Plattform and the ZVEI Consumer Electronics Association, said: “The figures show that the trend towards high-quality TVs with excellent picture quality continues, which enable flexible content use via the classic TV connection or via apps or HbbTV applications. This increases the basis for broadcasters and producers to sell their content via all distribution channels. It is also very positive that the purchase of new televisions leads directly to an increase in ‘electronic waste’ in very few cases.”
