Piracy still high in Nordics
New figures have shown that piracy still continues to be a major problem facing content rights holders in the Nordics.
According to new figures from Mediavision, even though the supply of legal online video services has increased, piracy is still high.
The report states that 14% of all people aged 15-74 in the region have illegally streamed or downloaded films and TV episodes within the past month. This equates to approximately 2.9 million people consuming pirated content.
Of that total, almost half are in Sweden. The report goes on to note that 17% of consumers in Sweden have watched pirated content recently. This is followed by Norway at 14%, while Finland and Denmark are both at 12% of all people aged 15-74 years old.
Natalia Borelius, senior analyst at Mediavision, said: “Streaming has been a big challenge for rights holders in the Nordics for many years. There are almost 22 000 titles currently available to Nordic consumers via legal online video services. Still, many choose to use illegal sources to access content. This shows that availability is not the only issue when it comes to piracy. Other measures may be needed if these figures are to be brought down.”
