Amazon sets up Fire TV production line in India
Amazon will produce Fire TV products in India, the company announced.
This is the first Amazon manufacturing line in India, and it will be operated in partnership with Foxconn’s Indian subsidiary Cloud Networks Technology. In particular, the production line will be focused on producing “hundreds of thousands” of Fire TV sticks annually to meet a growing consumer base in India. Production will start in India “later this year,” Amazon said.
The company added that it will “continuously evaluate scaling capacity to additional marketplaces/cities depending on the domestic demand.”
The announcement comes at a time when the government of prime minister Narendra Modi is focused on its Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) plan. This policy, which was introduced in 2020, aims to make India a hub for electronics manufacturing in a similar manner to China and Taiwan. It has already seen success in attracting Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron and the country has become the world’s second-biggest mobile phone maker.
Amit Agarwal, Global SVP and Country Leader for Amazon India, said: “Amazon is committed to partner with the Indian government to advance the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. We have pledged to invest US$1 billion to digitize 10 million small and medium businesses, help Indian businesses sell worldwide thereby enabling US$10 billion in cumulative exports, and create an additional 1 million jobs by 2025.”
India’s minister for communications, electronics and information technology and law and justice, Shri. Ravi Shankar Prasad, added: “India is an attractive investment destination and is poised to become a major player in the global supply chain in the electronics and IT products industry. Our Government’s decision to launch a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme has received tremendous response globally.
“We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well. This will further our mission of creating a Atmanirbhar Bharat which is digitally empowered.”
