DAZN to broadcast Club World Cup in Germany
DAZN has picked up the exclusive broadcast rights of the FIFA Club World Cup in Germany.
The competition, which sees the winners of each of the continental club competitions pitted against one another, typically takes place in December, but had been rescheduled to February as part of this season’s unforeseen staging.
Germany is the top European market for this year’s competition, thanks to representation from UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich, who beat France’s Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
With the rights unassigned, there were fears that the competition would experience a broadcast blackout. DAZN however has reacquired the rights to the competition that it has shown since 2018.
DAZN will show all of the short competition, which will take place between February 1-11 in Qatar. However, the European champions only enter at the semi-final stage which will be played on February 8 between Bayern Munich and Qatar’s Al-Duhail or Egypt’s Al Ahly.
While German audiences will have to be DAZN subscribers to watch the competition, large parts of the continent will be able to watch for free as a part of a 37-territory rights agreement with Eurovision Sport that was agreed in 2019. That deal covers a significant amount of the continent, but omits major markets including France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, Turkey and the UK which all have individual deals in place.
