Peacock launches on Google TV, as NBCU reveals extent of The Office coverage
NBCUniversal’s hybrid streaming service Peacock is now available on Google TV.
Google TV is a reskinned version of Android TV that exclusively runs on the latest Chromecast devices which launched in October. The OS builds on the original Android TV experience with a greater focus on home screen curation and access to live TV.
Users of the device will now have access to the NBCU streamer on the device, with content from the service also appearing in the curation-focused Google TV app on Android mobile devices.
Peacock becomes the latest service to add support for Google TV, with Netflix still being the biggest omission from the app.
Peacock has seen solid performance since its launch earlier this year and was recently announced to have 26 million users. The company will hope to improve upon that in the coming months, with NBC finally retrieving the rights to The Office which was previously one of Netflix’s most-watched shows in the US.
The title will also be used as a carrot to convince users of the ad-supported free tier to pay for Peacock, with the company revealing that only the first two seasons will be available for free when it launches on January 1. In order to watch the subsequent seven seasons, users will have to pay US$5 per month for the ad-supported premium tier, which also includes a dramatically increased content library size and access to live sports like the English Premier League.
Knowing the value of The Office, Peacock will launch extensive amounts of bonus content around the show for premium subscribers, including extended ‘superfan’ episodes, deleted scenes and behind the scenes footage. Peacock will also offer a live channel dubbed The Office Zen, which is “a 24/7 channel of ambient noise devoted to the sights and sounds of the office for anyone working at home.”
