La Liga introduces Fan Cam to capture player celebrations in empty stadiums

Spanish football league La Liga has launched new FanCam tech to provide an enhanced experience for housebound viewers.

The league said that it has installed new cameras – FanCams – at either end of each of the LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank grounds, with the aim to give fans “a closer and more personalised experience of player celebrations while they are unable to attend matches.”

The cameras are also clearly labelled for players so they know where to look and can celebrate with the fans as if they were in the ground.

The cameras were introduced last weekend in La Liga, following their successful use in the US. The league said that during the launch weekend, 62% of goals were celebrated in front of the FanCam and this figure is expected to rise to 100% over the coming matchdays.

The league said that the move is aiming to “reintroduce the passionate aspect of player celebrations, which have been slightly muted at times due to the lack of fans in the stadiums.”

The best videos captured by FanCam will also be shared to the league’s social media channels along with those of the players and clubs.

Melcior Soler, La Liga audiovisual department director, said: “FanCam is another step towards improving and personalising our audiovisual product. We are going to give fans a much more personal and genuine view of the players, seeing up close how they celebrate their team’s goals.

“We trust in the players to realise the importance of celebrating their goals in front of the FanCam, because this puts them in direct contact with their fans. That’s why we’re so convinced that their use of the FanCam will increase, to the point that it is used all the time.”
