DTVE report: Edge computing will have big impact on streaming, COVID-19 cements SVOD’s leading position
Industry insiders believe that edge computing and serverless compute services will have a positive impact on the ability of video streaming service providers to innovate in years to come, and that the COVID-19 pandemic has cemented SVOD’s position as the leading business model for streamers.
These are some of the findings of DTVE Intelligence’s latest report, Optimising streaming services: future challenges of increasing demand, which is available do download free of charge from our website.
Industry insiders overwhelmingly believe that edge computing and serverless compute services will have a positive impact on the ability of service providers to innovate.
A majority – 55% of all respondents – believe that these technologies will liberate content providers from the need for some big upfront investments and enable them to innovate to some extent, while 22% believe these technologies would enable consent providers from most big upfront investments and enable them to innovate at will.
Some 60% of respondents believe edge computing and serverless compute services will have a significant impact on their ability to implement advanced features and to innovate, while over 19% believe these technologies will have a transformative impact.
SVOD is meanwhile seen as the business model most likely to be boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with three out of four respondents taking the view that the pandemic will give a big or moderate boost to demand both in the short and long-term. Some 40% of respondents believe the impact will be big both in the short and long term.
Other findings of the report include that, in an age when content offerings are converging, Quality of Experience is king. Two elements of streaming services stand out in importance – the ability to scale rapidly in response to demand and the optimisation of content format and quality to a user’s particular device or internet bandwidth. The vast majority of respondents rated these two elements as either essential or very important.
