La Liga extends sub-Saharan Africa deal with SuperSport
Spanish football league La Liga has extended its rights deal with South Africa-based broadcaster SuperSport.
The deal will see the broadcaster continue to be the home of La Liga throughout sub-Saharan Africa in all languages apart from Arabic and French. SuperSport said that this extended partnership is central to its status as “the home of football on the African continent”.
In addition, La Liga’s dedicated English-language channel – which made its bow in the UK earlier this year – will also be made available to subscribers of DStv, the direct broadcast satellite service owned by MultiChoice with approximately 18.9 million subscribers.
Gideon Khobane, chief executive of SuperSport, said: “We’re delighted to have finalised a new deal as football is one of our popular broadcast pillars. LaLiga is a fantastic product and our viewers enjoy the excitement on show from week to week.”
Melcior Soler, director of the LaLiga audiovisual department, said: “SuperSport has been a strong partner for LaLiga in Africa for many years and our fanbase across the continent has grown significantly during this time. We look forward to further years of success together.”
This is the latest rights renewal deal for La Liga following the news that Orange in Spain has announced a sublicensing agreement with Telefónica for domestic broadcast rights to the 2020/21 La Liga and Uefa Champions League.
