Parrot Analytics: Disney+ delay in France may have boosted demand
Expressions of demand for Disney+ in France increased significantly after the coronavirus crisis erupted despite the delayed launch of the streaming service, which may have helped stimulate interest rather than dampened it, laccording to Parrot Analytics.
Parrot found that the share of demand for Disney+ was up 7.54% in France since March 11, when the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global pandemic.
Parrot Analytics measures global demand for TV shows based on a combination of social media engagement, video streaming and peer-to-peer protocols, photo sharing, blogging, and research platforms.
Despite the fact that Disney pushed back the launch of its SVOD service to April 7 on government concerns about the impact on internet congestion, demand for the service registered the largest growth in the three weeks following the WHO declaration compared to the prior three weeks, according to Parrot.
Disney+ launched in France with the premiere of Pixar’s new release Onward having been added to the service. Onward was DIsney+’s second new release to arrive to the platform almost immediately after its theatrical release – Frozen II being the first. New series include Paradise Island and Tut’s Treasures: Hidden Secrets.
“Demand was already climbing for Disney+ in France as anticipation leading up to the original March 23 launch date rose,” said Steve Langdon, Partnership Director, EMEA, Parrot Analytics.
“The delay to April 7 didn’t slow that momentum and, in fact may have increased demand overall. The lockdown had French viewers hungry for shows like The Mandalorian therefore the service launched to an eager audience.”
