Netflix to stop supporting older Samsung devices in December

Netflix is dropping support for some Samsung devices in December, including certain smart TVs.

Announcing the news on its website, Samsung has warned users that support for some Smart TV apps will end on December 1. The post says that many older TVs are not equipped with the technical capability to present Netflix’s latest more feature-rich interface.

The company said: “In the future, Netflix can be viewed from many other devices capable of connecting to your TV.”

The Samsung website does not provide a list of sets that will lose access to Netflix, and instead directs users to http://netflix.com/compatibledevices to see whether they own a compatible device.

The streamer evidently plans to roll out a new update around the beginning of December, with this Samsung announcement following similar news out of Roku in October.

Some users of older Roku streaming devices received a notification saying: “due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after December 1, 2019.”

A spokesperson for the company confirmed that “the first two Roku Models” will be the only to lose Netflix, though it is unclear whether they meant the first two devices Roku released, or the first two generations of models. All of these were released prior to 2012, so it is likely that Netflix views them as not worth supporting anymore.
