Parrot Analytics: Italian love for Stranger Things
In a familiar turn of events, Stranger Things has dominated Parrot Analytics’ originals in-demand chart for the week ending October 6 in Italy.
Parrot Analytics analyses the demand for recent popular digital titles across international markets, based on the application of artificial intelligence to expressions of demand across social media, fan sites, peer-to-peer protocols and file-sharing platforms.
With 8.5 million average demand expressions, the sci-fi hit – which was recently renewed for a fourth season by Netflix in a reported nine-figure deal – amassed almost double the demand for 13 Reasons Why in second with 4.8 million.
In total, Netflix titles make up eight of the top 10 with La Casa De Papel, Lucifer, Narcos, Orange Is The New Black, The Politician and Black Mirror making up numbers three-through-eight in that order.
Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale sits in ninth with 2.6 million average demand expressions, while Good Omens – Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman novel – rounds out the top 10 with 2.4 million average demand expressions.
A recent report from Parrot Analytics also found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that Netflix captured 62.6% of worldwide demand for digital original series in Q2 2019.
While Netflix is the leader, its global market share was down 3.1% from its Q1 result of 64.6% and down 9% from its 2018 full-year result of 71%.
Samuel Stadler, VP of marketing at Parrot Analytics said: “With Netflix taking the lion’s share of global demand for its original series, it’s not surprising that in the second quarter of this year the service continues to lead in the drama genre for most markets.
“Lucifer has come out on top in six markets examined and Stranger Things was the most in-demand digital original in the US and South Korea for Q2. We expect Stranger Things will have a sizable impact on overall platform demand for Netflix in the US and other key markets in the third quarter.”
