Orange sees solid growth in TV, but loses ground in Spain
Orange has seen a 5% growth in TV customers over Q2, but has lost a significant amount in Spain.
Announcing its quarterly results, the telco confirmed it had attracted 400,000 subscribers between April and June, taking it to a total of 9.7 million TV subscribers globally.
The company said that the success of shows Game of Thrones and Chernobyl contributed to this growth.
France makes up the majority of Orange’s TV business, which saw a growth from 7.103 million to 7.153 million.
Despite mostly positive figures, all aspects of Orange’s Spanish operation saw quarterly decline in what is a predictably unstable market.
TV subscribers dropped from 705,000 to 664,000, representing a decrease of 5.81%. Broadband too saw a dip from 4.133 million to 4.106 million, a drop of 0.65%.
In its results statement, Orange said that Spain’s overall decline of 1.6% was “affected by a highly promotional market”.
The declining subscriber numbers are buoyed by a growth in revenues, as previously produced by regulator CNMC and reported by local paper El Economista. Thanks to Vodafone’s decision to scrap La Liga broadcasts, Orange audiovisual revenues grew by 40% from €40.05 million to €67.49 million.
For the rest of Europe, the TV business rose from 1.85 million subscribers to 1.89 million subscribers. In Poland, Belgium and Luxembourg and Central Europe, the TV business saw modest growth.
