Mediapro bids €1.3bn for Italy’s Serie A
Spanish Mediapro has made a renewed offer of close to €1.3 billion per season for rights to the Italian Serie A.
The company had an initial bid of €1.2 billion rejected by the league, with the latest bid to be discussed at Serie A’s general assembly on July 8, reports Gazetto dello Sport.
Mediapro highly values the Italian league, and wants to secure rights for the 2021/22 and 2023/24 seasons. The deal also would include archive access, along with production and distribution of a dedicated Serie A channel called Canal Liga.
Beyond an initial fee, revenues of up to €100 million would be split 75:25 between Mediapro and Serie A, with a reversed ratio for additional revenues exceeding €100 million.
The proposed figure is a drastic increase to what Mediapro offered for the rights to the 2018/19 and 2020/21 seasons. The company won media rights with a bid just €1,000 above Serie A’s €1.05 billion reserve price. This offer however was cancelled due to a legal challenge from Sky that found the offer would create a monopoly. The rights were later awarded to DAZN and Sky Italia in three year deals worth €937 million.
