MultiChoice to lay off 2,000 in restructuring of customer care
South Africa’s MultiChoice is planning to lay off over 2,000 employees, according to press reports.
According to Reuters, the pay TV outfit has launched a consultation to cute 2,194 positions, principally in customer care call centres and walk-in centres. The company said it was restructuring its customer care operations in response to changes in consumer behaviour and competition from OTT TV services.
MultiChoice has seen a decline in the use of call centres and walk-in centres in favour of online contacts with customers
A South African trade union had previously been reported as saying that the pay TV outfit last week notified workers that it intended to lay off 1,790 employees.
As reported by Reuters, the Information Communication and Technology Union said that it had not been informed about the redundancies in advance, which made the process “unlawful”.
