BBC agrees encoder deal with Bitmovin

The BBC is partnering with Bitmovin in a deal that allows it to make live shows from the BBC’s TV channels available on satellite provider set-top boxes soon after their time of broadcast.

The BBC is using the Bitmovin Encoder to speed up content preparation and maximise quality for selected live content on catch-up TV and video-on-demand services.

The solution is also being used in ultra high definition (UHD) and high dynamic range (HDR) trials for shows such as Dynasties, which was available in high quality via the iPlayer on devices like smart TVs and cable provider set-top boxes.

“Every asset the BBC produces needs to be delivered at the best possible quality, including for catch-up and new release VOD services,” said Stefan Lederer, CEO at Bitmovin.

“We are proud our encoding solution enables their viewers to access their favorite programs in a timely manner, leveraging our cloud-native, massively distributed encoding technology which achieves greater encoding speeds without compromising video quality.”
