Netflix localises in Indonesia

Netflix is localising its service in Indonesia and has agreed deals with a number of local mobile operators.

From tomorrow Indonesian Netflix users will be able to access a localised Bahasa Indonesia user interface and Bahasa Indonesia subtitles.

Popular Netflix shows like Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, will be available with Bahasa Indonesia subtitles, as will Korean series like Mr Sunshine and YG Future Strategy Office.

Netflix is also adding more Indonesian content on the service, including films like Laskar Pelangi, Merantau, Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2, Galih dan Ratna and Filosofi Kopi. It is adding a new Indonesian original movie to the service this week called The Night Comes for Us.

At the same time, the streaming giant has also announced video data plan package deals with operators including XL Axiata, Bolt, Hutchison 3 Indonesia and Smartfren.

“By engaging with consumers in their preferred language, Netflix becomes more accessible and relevant to consumers. We are delighted that now our Indonesian members will also experience the Netflix service in their local language,” said Jessica Lee, Netflix’s vice-president of corporate communications, Asia.

“When our members in Indonesia come to our service we want to delight and excite them with the depth and breadth of content choices from which they can easily discover through the Netflix experience.”

The news comes in the same week that Netflix added a record 7.0 million new members in the third quarter, out-performing its own forecast thanks to strong growth across all its markets including Asia. Its total user base now stands at 137 million.
