TDG: eSports to become a US$1.6bn business by 2022

The global eSports industry generated revenues of US$905 million last year with that figure set to reach US$1.6 billion by 2022, according to The Diffusion Group.

The research firm’s report claims that eSports had a global audience of 557 million people last year and cited a number of factors that make eSports “ripe for solid growth during the next decade”.

These include 5G rollout, faster computers, new business models and revenue streams, new measurement tools, and mainstream acceptance from fans, advertisers and sponsors.

“As entertainment executives readily admit, it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify and build an audience of loyal, engaged consumers with highly desirable demographics. That’s one of the reasons there is so much excitement around eSports,” said senior TDG analyst and report author, Patrick Perez.
