Telefónica sees TV base grow
Telefónica saw its TV base grow by 5.6% year-on-year to reach 8.7 million at the end of the quarter to June, excluding OTT TV services. The company’s IPTV base increased by 17% year-on-year. Churn fell marginally.
Video revenues amounted to €718 million, up 0.4%. For the first half, video revenues stood at €1.44 billion, up 0.7%.
In Spain, the number of customers of the Movistar Fusión converged service with TV rose to 78%, up 8% year-on-year. Overall, Fusión customers numbered 4.5 million. Fusión ARPU stood at €89.50, up 5.5% thanks mostly to price changes. Telefónica España pay TV customers were up 7% to 3.9 million, with quarterly net additions down to 8,000, attributed by seasonality.
Telefónica announced at the end of May that it would integrate Netflix in its video and TV platforms, with promotion for this now started in the UK.
In Brazil, Telefónica’s local operation saw fixed access pay TV numbers grow by 51% year-on-year with net additions of 56,000 in the last quarter and 106,000 additions in the first half. Pay TV ARPU also increased by 4.2% in the first half. IPTV revenues were up 59.1% in the quarter and 62.6% in the first half. However, overall pay TV revenues including satellite fell by 17.3% for the first half to €229 million. Overall pay TV subscribers stood at 1.614 million, down marginally.
Fixed line pay TV customers in the Spanish-speaking southern region of South America grew by 9% year-on-year in the second quarter, thanks to a strong performance in Peru. Nevertheless, overall pay TV revenues for the first half dropped by 6.7% to €269 million. Pay TV customers stood at 2.156 million, up 9%.
Fixed line pay TV subs in the northern region, including Colombia and Mexico, grew by 5% of 29,000 net additions in the quarter. However, overall pay TV revenues were down 5.9% to €44 million. Pay TV customers were up 5% to 1.03 million.
