Futuresource: 125 million SVOD subscriptions in the US
There are now 125 million subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) subscriptions in the US, according to Futuresource.
The research firm said that while consumer spend on SVOD is still just 10% of the total pay TV market, further growth is expected in 2018.
This will be driven by continued growth in established SVOD services and the quick expansion of a “plethora of less established services”, with platforms like Amazon Channels also helping to drive this momentum, according to the report.
Futuresource predicts that the overall US video and pay TV market will reach US$140 billion by the end of 2018.
“Pay TV, largely through increased ARPU rather than subscriber growth, is contributing the most to overall growth in wider video consumer spend, SVOD continues to provide an increasingly significant contribution,” said the research.
The research claims that the direct-to-consumer services, media industry acquisitions and consolidation, and regularity impact – for instance net neutrality – will ensure that the continued evolution of the landscape in 2018.
