Dataxis: DVB-T2 to reach 72% of European homes by 2022
By 2022 some 72% of European households will receive digital terrestrial television (DTT) using the DVB-T2 standard, according to Dataxis.
The research firm emphasised the growth in DVB-T2 implementations in Europe, claiming these will increase from a footprint of roughly 30% of households in 2017.
“This increase is primarily due to the switchover planned in several European countries such as Italy and Spain, which are expected to reach 25.8 million DVB-T2 households – i.e. 57% of all DVB-T2 households,” said the report.
“The question remains as to whether the investments required by DVB-T2 will be worth it for the remaining countries, which managed to implement HDTV via DTT by conducting a shift from MPEG 2 to MPEG 4.”
DVB-T2 is currently being rolled out to replace DVB-T in many parts of the world. It is a more advanced DTT system this is designed to have increased efficiency and resilience to interference.
As of 2017 some 12 European countries still use hybrid DVB-T and DVB-T2 networks, with the two standards being used on different multiplexes, according to Dataxis.
It forecasts that this number will decrease to eight countries in 2022, provided that national authorities do not hold up the switchover.
