Amazon launches Fire TV Stick Basic around the world

Amazon has launched its Fire TV Stick Basic Edition streaming device in 100 new countries and territories.

The device, which can output video at up to 1080p HD resolution and 60 frames per second, is now available around the world, including in Canada, France, Italy and Spain.

“Last year, we made Amazon Prime Video available to customers globally, and today, we’re building on that momentum as we introduce Fire TV Stick Basic Edition to new customers around the world,” said Marc Whitten, vice president, Amazon Fire TV.

“This makes streaming content from apps like Prime Video fast and easy and we can’t wait to hear what customers think.”

The HDMI device contains a quad-core processor, 1 GB of memory for streaming, and 8 GB of storage for apps and games. It also features 802.11ac WiFi, and support for High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) streaming and Dolby Audio.

The wider rollout of this device comes after Amazon recently refreshed its Fire TV line in key markets like the UK and US.

In the US customers can buy the All-New Fire TV for US$69.99 or the latest Fire TV Stick for US$39.99. Both include Alexa voice remotes while the All-New Fire TV also supports 4K Ultra HD video.

In the US the Fire TV Basic, which does not include Alexa voice remote, currently costs US$49.99. In new markets like France and Spain it is now selling for €59.99 – or at a reduced price of €39.99 with Amazon Prime.

Amazon took on Netflix by launching Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories around the world last December.
