Asia Pacific SVOD set to overtake North America
Asia Pacific is due to overtake North America this year to become the biggest subscription video-on-demand market by subscriber numbers.
This is according to Digital TV Research, which estimates that by 2022 there will be 546 million SVOD subscribers globally – 43% of whom will be in Asia Pacific and 31% in North America.
By comparison, the Global SVOD Forecasts report claims that at the end of last year there were 263 million SVOD subscribers – 43% in North America and 35% in Asia Pacific.
“Netflix’s dominance of global SVOD is falling – from a third the global subscribers in 2016 to a quarter by 2022,” according to Digital TV Research principal analyst, Simon Murray.
“However, the company will enjoy considerable growth – adding 28 million subscribers between 2017 and 2022.”
The research estimates that Netflix’s share of global SVOD revenues will fall from 45% in 2017 to 40% by 2022 – but will still increase by 55% over the same time period.
Total global SVOD revenue is tipped to more than double from US$17 billion in 2016 to US$41 billion in 2022.
