Hispasat’s Amazonas 5 satellite successfully launched
Hispasat’s Amazonas 5 satellite has entered orbit after successfully launching on an International Launch Services (ILS) Proton rocket.
The satellite was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 1.23am today local time, and separated into orbit roughly nine hours and 12 minutes after lift-off.
Amazonas 5 will be located at 61° West and provide TV and broadband services – as well as corporate networks and other telecoms applications – in South and Central America.
The SSL-built satellite has a high throughput Ka-band payload with 34 Ka-band spot beams for broadband services and a Ku-band payload with 24 transponders for fixed satellite services.
“The success of Amazonas 5 allows us to expand our television and Internet service in Latin America and it will ensure a clearpath for growth of our business,” said Hispasat CEO, Carlos Espinós Gómez.
ILS president, Kirk Pysher, said: “It’s very rewarding to have launched Amazonas 5 for Hispasat after the first launch of Amazonas many years ago.”
