YouTube adds HDR to Android phones

YouTube has reportedly added high dynamic range (HDR) video playback options for a number of high-end Android phones.

According to various reports, users with compatible devices are now able to use the YouTube app to access HDR videos at up to 1440p resolution and frame rates of up to 60 fps.

Compatible phones at launch are said to include the Samsung S8, Samsung Note8, Sony Xperia XZ Premium and the LG V30.

YouTube users can already watch HDR videos direct on compatible HDR TVs, or by streaming to HDR TVs via a Chromecast Ultra.

Viewers attempting to watch HDR content on non-HDR devices will see the video as a standard dynamic range video.
