Curran takes up EBU role
The former director general of Irish national broadcaster RTÉ, Noel Curran, has taken up his new role as director general of the EBU.
Curran has replaced Ingrid Deltenre, who has stepped down from the European Broadcasting Union’s top job after eight years to focus on her various board responsibilities.
“I am delighted to be taking the helm of the world’s leading alliance of public service media (PSM),” said Curran
“This is a challenging time for everyone working in PSM but, it is also an incredibly exciting time, with new technology presenting a slew of new opportunities and the role of public service broadcasters as trusted sources of news and information never being more important than it is today.”
Curran was director general of RTÉ between 2010 and 2016, having previously worked in various roles at the Irish broadcaster as a journalist, producer and managing director.
RTÉ announced Curran’s departure last April, when it named Discovery’s Northern Europe chief, Dee Forbes, as its first female director general.
Deltenre meanwhile announced in February that she would step down from the EBU this summer after to focus her attention on her board duties at Banque Cantonale Vaudoise, Givaudan and Deutsche Post/DHL.
Curran was named as the EBU’s next director general in May.
