Mediapro takes eSports strategy to Latin America
Spanish broadcaster Mediapro’s Argentinian arm has produced and is commercialising the rights to one of South America’s main eSports events, the Copa Latinoamérica Sur Clausura as the latest stage of its strategic move into the eSports arena.
The event, held in Buenos Airies at the weekend, was transmitted by ESPN+. Mediapro said that its entry into the Argentinian eSports market is the latest iteration of the strategy set out last October of investing heavily in the burgeoning eSports market.
Mediapro has integrated leading eSports league the LVP into the group and launched an ambitious international expansion plan to internationalise its involvement, taking the LVP to nine international markets over the next five years. Its first international move was to create ArenaGG, a new amateur eSports competition space in Portugal, and the company is now following up on this by moving into the Latin American market, building on its existing presence in 41 cities in 24 countries.
The winner of the Copa Latinoamérica Sur Clausura will represent the Latin American region in the world championships of League of Legends, seen as one of the most important international eSports tournaments, broadcast in 18 languages to an audience of 432 million last time round.
Spain has emerged over the last year as one of the most competitive markets in eSports internationally. Telefónica has teamed up with Modern Times Group-owned ESL to launch Movistar eSports as part of a major investment in the genre, while Vodafone recently launched an own-branded version of the Twitch eSports channel.
