Parrot Analytics: Netflix dominates digital originals across European markets
Netflix dominated expressions of interest in digital originals across seven major western European countries in the week to July 16, with Amazon’s The Grand Tour making the only significant impact from a rival subscription video-on-demand service, according to data from Parrot Analytics.
Parrot Analytics analyses the demand for recent popular digital titles across international markets, based on the application of artificial intelligence to expressions of demand across social media, fan sites, peer-to-peer protocols and file-sharing platforms.
In Germany, Netflix dominated Parrot’s listing of ‘in-demand’ shows, taking nine of the top 10 spots. House of Cards was the top title with 3.822 million average demand expressions, followed closely by Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things and 13 Reasons Why. Amazon’s The Grand Tour was the only non-Netflix entry, taking the number seven spot with 1.844 million expressions.
In the UK, new Netflix animated title Castlevania topped the list, with 5.478 million average demand expressions, followed by Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which is available in the UK on free-to-view on-demand service All4. The Grand Tour took third place, with the remainder of the top 10 exclusively populated by Netflix titles.
In Spain, Netflix took all top 10 places in the list, led by Orange is The New Black, with 2.760 million average demand expressions, and Stranger Things, with 2.657 million.
Local-language content was more prominent than in other non English-language markets however. Narcos, filmed in Spanish and English, took the number six spot, while new Netflix Spanish period drama Las Chicas del Cable came in at number seven and Mexican political drama Ingobernable edged in at number 10.
In Italy, Netflix again achieved a clean sweep, led this time by Narcos, with 1.434 million average demand expressions, and Castlevania, with 4.073 million.
In the Netherlands, Netflix dominated the list, with Orange is the New Black taking top spot, with 0.794 million average demand expressions. The Grand Tour, the only non-Netflix title, took third place.
In Sweden, Netflix also took nine of the top 10 spots on the list, led by Stranger
Things with 0.469 million average demand expressions. The Grand Tour, the only non-Netflix entry, again took the number three spot, with 0.350 million expressions.
In Denmark, The Grand Tour topped a list that was otherwise Netflix-dominated. The Grand Tour totaled 0.215 million average demand expressions.
