UK culture secretary reappointed

UK culture secretary Karen Bradley has retained her position in a cabinet re-shuffle that followed last week’s general election.

Bradley was first appointed secretary of state for culture, media and sport on 14 July 2016, and was elected Conservative MP for Staffordshire Moorlands in May 2010 – a seat she retained last week.

In April, Bradley extended the investigation deadline for 21st Century Fox’s planned £11.7 billion takeover of Sky until after the UK general election.

In a statement published at the time, Bradley said she had written to UK broadcast regulator Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), extending the period within which they must report to her until late June.

Sky’s shareprice fell nearly 3% on Friday as news of the election result – which saw the Conservative party lose its majority – came in. Analysts have suggested the result, which saw Labour strengthen its position, could hinder or delay the planned Sky takeover.
