Eutelsat 172B moves into geostationary orbit
The Eutelsat 172B satellite has initiated its ascent into geostationary orbit, marking the first stage of its four-month climb to 172° East.
The new high power electric satellite, which launched last Friday on an Ariane 5 rocket, is scheduled to enter into service in the fourth quarter of this year.
Since its launch, Eutelsat 172B has undergone a series of critical manoeuvres that include positioning electric propulsion motors in preparation for orbit-raising, and the full deployment of solar panels to generate power during this phase.
“A week since launch, Eutelsat 172B has passed the critical stages of its deployment before embarking on the ascent to geo,” said Eutelsat CEO, Rodolphe Belmer.
“This complex process reflects meticulous preparation by Eutelsat and Airbus teams who have worked hand in hand on a ground-breaking satellite programme customised for Asia-Pacific markets.”
Eutelsat 172B will deliver increased capacity for applications including in-flight and maritime connectivity, cellular backhaul, corporate networks, video and government services. Its 172° East location will give it reach in Asia-Pacific over land and sea.
