RTVE appoints new TV chief
Spain’s pubcaster, RTVE, has named the head of its Catalonia division has its overall television director.
Eladio Jareño (pictured) will succeed José Ramón Díez, who resigned from the post on February 25.
Jareño has twice led RTVE Catalonia, once between 2003 and 2004, and then again starting 2014. He has also ran RTVE’s children’s and youth arm between 2004 and 2008, during which time the thematic TV Clan was developed.
He has become RTVE’s TV chief after his proposed appointment, made by RTVE president José Antonio Sánchez, gained the support of six of the pubcaster’s nine-strong council.
The news comes after RTVE posted a loss of €33.6 million (US$36.8 million), which represented an improvement of 70% year-on-year.
RTVE, like virtually all of Europe’s public broadcasters, is under increasing pressure to save money while delivering high-standard programming.
