Internet set-tops now in 21% of US broadband homes
Internet set-top boxes such as Roku and Apple TV devices are now present in 21% of US broadband homes, according to new research from The Diffusion Group (TDG).
TDG’s ‘In-Home CE and Home Network Ecosystem 2015’ report claims that US internet STB penetration has increased 63% in the past year, with just 13% of broadband homes owning these devices in early 2014.
“20 million US households now use an Internet set-top box to access streaming TV services,” said TDG founder and director of research, Michael Greeson.
“As Apple prepares to launch its new Internet set-top box, it does so knowing demand for such platforms have significant headroom, and will be driven by not only greenfield purchases, but multi-unit and replacement sales, as well.”
The research claims that internet set-tops are particularly popular among broadband users aged 25 to 44, with 29% penetration. By comparison, 20% of people aged 18-24 were found to use an internet set-top, with these viewers “more likely to turn to game consoles than newer platforms.”
