Sky axes linear 3D channel
Sky is scrapping its 3D linear channel and making its 3D content “fully on-demand” from this June.
Announcing the move in a company blog post, Sky brand director, TV products, Luke Bradley-Jones, said that the changes to 3D are “all part of making our on demand offering a fantastic destination for customers.”
Sky launched its Sky 3D channel in 2010 and it has been home to content such as David Attenborough documentary Flying Monsters and Hollywood movies like Avatar.
From this summer, Sky customers will be able to access 3D movie premieres on-demand like Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as well as natural history programming and documentaries.
Bradley-Jones said that in the UK and Ireland, almost 7 million customers have connected Sky’s on-demand services and that on-demand downloads have reached more than 300 million in the last three months alone – up 60% year-on-year.
