MTV to launch on Movistar as Viacom expands Spanish presence
MTV is to launch on Telefónica’s Movistar TV service tomorrow following its launch in Spain last year on the Canal+ pay TV platform.
MTV launched ceased to be available as a free-to-air service in the country a year ago and launched on Canal+’s platform ahead of launching on the Telecable platform in Asturias in January.
The latest deal with Telefónica is part of a wider agreement that will see other Viacom International Media Networks channels launch in Spain. Nickelodeon HD, which is already available on Canal+, Vodafone-owned Ono, Telecable and Euskaltel, will join the Movistar TV platform in the coming months.
Movistar TV will also carry Viacom’s Nick Jr, completing the line-up of Viacom services on the platform. The kids channel has been available on Ono since 2010 and on Canal+ and Telecable since 2011.
Viacom’s Spanish manager Manuel Gil said that the new agreements would allow the channels to reach a potentially larger audience in Spain.
