Pay TV to generate US$269 billion this year
The global pay TV market is set to generate more than US$269 billion (€212 billion) in revenues by the end of this year, driven by HD subscriptions and major sporting events, according to ABI Research.
ABI predicts that there will be more than 920 million pay TV subscribers worldwide by the end of 2014 and that though average revenue per user (ARPU) is expected to decrease slightly because of increasing price competition, this will be at a lower rate than last year’s ARPU drop.
“The growing number of HD subscribers as well as major sporting events such as the World Cup 2014 have contributed to improving ARPU,” said Jake Saunders, ABI Research’s vice-president and practice director of core forecasting.
ABI claims that the pay TV market to continue to grow in the coming years, anticipating worldwide revenues to hit US$323 billion by 2019, from a base of nearly 1.1 billion subscribers.
