Price decline offsets German TV sales growth
The World Cup gave a boost to sales of TVs in Germany in the first half of 2014, but the rise in units shipped was more than offset by a decline in prices, leading to a year-on-year fall in the value of the market of 1%, according to figures compiled by local consumer electronics association the GFU.
According to the GFU’s figures, the number of TVs shipped grew by 8.6%, but an 8.9% fall in prices led to a decline in revenues to €2.2 billion.
The latest installment of the regular CEMIX consumer electronics market index, compiled by the GFU, technical retail trade association BAT and GfK, recorded a sharp rise – 54.4% – in sales of video game consoles, while sales of smartphones grew by 7.4% and tablet and projector systems also saw strong growth in both units shipped and the value of sales. However the set-top box market showed a sharp decline, down 17.5% in revenue terms year-on-year.
