Netflix to have capacity for 1Tbps in France

Netflix will have internet capacity to deliver one Terabit per second of traffic ready for its French launch and is set to join the France-IX internet exchange point set up by a group of CDN and network providers to provide internet transit through Paris, according to the subscription VoD provider’s networks chief Dave Temkin.

Temkin posted news of Netflix’s capacity plans for France and the imminent launch in the country of its Open Connect content delivery network (CDN) on his Twitter account at the end of last week. “Open Connect comes to Paris! With 1 Terabit of capacity ready for launch, @NetflixFra will be on @ixpfranceix soon,” Temkin tweeted.

Netflix’s 1Tbps of capacity has been installed in the Telehouse 2 facility situated in the Voltaire district of the French capital, using equipment from Arista Networks and Juniper Networks. About 80% of French internet traffic passes through the Telehouse 2 facility.

In addition to capacity from public interconnect provider France-IX, Netflix is expected to strike interconnect deals with French ISPs as well as deals to deliver its services direct to their subscribers via set-top boxes.

Netflix’s capacity of 1Tbps is greater than that used by France’s YouTube rival Dailymotion, but less than that of YouTube itself. French cable operator Numericable reportedly accounts for between 200 and 300Gbps of traffic, while ISP SFR reportedly accounts for about 700Gbps.
