World Cup semi-final sets German TV and Twitter records
Last night’s Brazil vs Germany World Cup semi-final match set new TV viewing records and was the most discussed sports match on Twitter, according to the microblogging network and broadcaster ZDF.
The German public broadcaster said today that the game attracted 32.57 million viewers – the highest ever recorded under Germany’s current audience measurement system. This represented a record 87.8% market share.
Meanwhile, according to Twitter’s own data, the match notched up 35. 6 million tweets during the telecast of the match, making it “the most discussed single sports game ever on Twitter.”
Twitter Data said that Sami Khedira’s goal for Germany after 29 minutes – the German team’s fifth of the night – was the peak moment of the match, producing 580,166 tweets in the minute after it was scored.
ZDF said that the game had written “sports and television history” and had beaten Germany’s previous record-holding broadcast – the 2010 World Cup semi-final between Germany and Spain, which attracted 31.1 million viewers and an audience share of 71.6%.
