Sky claims Turkish trademark victory

Sky has claimed victory in a Turkish trademark infringement case, after an Istanbul court ruled that channel operators Atlas and T-Medya were not authorised to use the name ‘SkyTurk’.

The decision, which was finalised in April but published this week, found that Atlas and T-Medya had infringed Sky’s trademark and ruled that they should not use the Sky brand.

The SkyTurk channel has since been rebranded and now goes by the name ‘360’.

Commenting on the ruling, Sky’s director of international intellectual property, Celia Pendery, said: “We regard any unauthorised use of the ‘Sky’ brand name as a clear infringement of our trade mark rights. We remain vigilant in protecting our brand and will continue to take action against companies that seek to use our trade marks without consent.”

Sky first took legal action against Atlas and T-Medya in 2003 and lodged trademark infringement proceedings in 2006.
