Technicolor partners with IBM in cloud push

Technicolor has teamed up with IBM to develop a cloud-based monitoring and management service, Virdata, targeted at the Internet of Things and M2M (machine-to-machine) sectors. 

The service, which can be used to track performance for a range of IP-connected devices, will be hosted on IBM’s SoftLayer infrastructure. It will offer device and application management and monitoring capabilities for a range of IP-connected devices used across sectors such as automotive, utilities, health, industrial automation and retail.

Vince Pizzica, senior executive vice president and president of corporate partnerships and ventures at Technicolor said the move is a “logical extension” of its portfolio catering to the growing digital entertainment market.

Pizzica said the company is leveraging its scale and digital capabilities to expand into “broader ecosystems,” and it is also working closely with open source cloud heavyweights Open Stack and Cloud Foundry to develop more interoperable cloud-based services in the big data and M2M spaces – two of the highest-growth tech areas currently.

The company plans to demonstrate the service this week at consumer tradeshow CES.
