Thomson showcases live MPEG-DASH/HEVC transmission
Thomson Video Networks is demoing a High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) broadcast and decoding application for the first time at IBC.
The demo will see it combine HEVC video compression and MPEG-DASH delivery and will be based on the latest Thomson ViBE VS7000 multi-screen video system and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
This processor supports the HEVC codec for decoding a live broadcast stream, enabling consistent video streaming that puts less strain on heavily trafficked data networks and providing an optimal mobile entertainment experience, according to Thomson.
“Bringing a new technology to this space requires a perfect alignment of the entire video ecosystem. Illustrating the readiness of HEVC and DASH from the headend to the end-user device is a key step toward demonstrating to broadcasters how practical deployments can be implemented,” said Eric Gallier, vice president of marketing at Thomson Video Networks.
The new HEVC standard targets a 50% reduction in bitrate compared to H.264, while MPEG-DASH is the latest adaptive streaming standard, providing a flexible solution to support multiple video codec formats.
