Canal Digital to deploy ADB Wideband eight-tuner DVR

Canal Digital Kabel-tv in Norway is to be the first pay TV operator to deploy a new eight-tuner HD DVR from ADB.

ADB Wideband has been designed by ADB as a media hub for the redistribution of content to tablets, smartphones, connected TVs and other set-top boxes.

Canal Digital Kabel-tv will deploy the box later this year. Subscribers will initially be able to record up to three channels while watching a fourth. At a later date, Canal Digital will enable subscribers to use the DVR as a whole-home media gateway serving multiple devices.

ADB Wideband is designed to enable access to live channels, programme recordings and OTT services on multiple devices simultaneously. The availability of multiple tuners also makes it possible to decrease channel-change times by enabling decoding to begin on the preceding and next channels while channel surfing, according to ADB.

ADB Wideband will allow subscribers to connect and distribute content to up to five devices simultaneously. ADB Wideband also features DOCSIS broadband access and WiFi connectivity, as well as facilitating video transcoding and translating for smaller display devices such as smartphones. The DVR uses ADB’s Carbo user interface and supports both OTT and broadcast content.

“We chose ADB Wideband because it provides an advanced solution that is destined to be the gateway to home entertainment for many years. It will initially provide our subscribers with a powerful, flexible hybrid HD DVR that over time will evolve to become a media hub for a true multi-screen, multi-room environment. We will start deploying ADB Wideband to customers this autumn,” said Catharina Kokkim, communications manager at Canal Digital.
