Teleste wins French RFoG contract

Technology provider Teleste has won a contract to supply Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG) technology to French inter-municipal utility organisation the Syndicat Intercommunal d’énergie et de e-communication de l’Ain (SIEA).

The SIEA plans to develop broadband infrastructure covering over 90% of home and businesses in a region of the Ain department by 2014.

Teleste will deliver optical access network equipment to serve a customer basis of 45,000 potential network subscribers. The value of the first phase deployment is about €2 million, and includes an option to continue equipment deliveries during a second phase. The estimated value of the second phase deliveries is €1.5 million, which will possibly be confirmed by the end of 2013, according to Teleste.

According to the company, this will be one of the first significant RFoG implementations in Europe. RFoG allows DOCSIS-based broadband to be delivered over a fibre-to-the-premises network, meaning that a service provider can combine new-build fibre networks with legacy hybrid fibre coax, using its existing DOCSIS infrastructure to deliver services to both.
