MTV Video Music Awards sets new Twitter record
The MTV Video Music Awards set a record for tweets-per-minute over the weekend, beating a previous record set at the Superbowl, according to MTV.
Citing Twitter stats, the network said that pop star Miley Cyrus’ performance notched up 306,000 tweets per minute, more than Beyonce’s performance at the Superbowl.
“During the two-hour telecast, social media exploded as fans passionately reacted to the performances and winners generating 120 national and worldwide trending topics on Twitter, and 1.2 million Instagram likes,” said MTV.
The TV coverage of the event drew a total audience rating of 10.1 million viewers, a 66% increase compared to 2012.
Twitter said that, based on Social Guide stats, 18.5 million tweets were made around the show, a 270% increase on last year and a figure that accounted for 90% of the conversation about TV on the night.
