RTL Netherlands to expand VOD offering

RTL Netherlands is planning to expand its VOD service RTL XL with more movies and series in a bid to take on Netflix, which is due to launch in the country later this year. 

RTL Netherlands’ managing director of digital media, Arno Otto said that it aims to add content that has not been on RTL’s linear TV output, both foreign and Dutch.

Part of the new content offering will include major Hollywood films. RTL said that it had already invested in some 100 US productions, including The Expendables 2, The Three Musketeers 3D and Killing Them Softly and was looking to take more rights.

Earlier this month, Netflix said the Netherlands would be its next European launch market, following its rollout in the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland in October. In Europe, it is also currently available in the UK and Ireland.
