EU making digital progress

Over half of European Union citizens can now access broadband speeds of more than 30Mbps, according to the EU’s latest ‘digital scorecard’.

According to the latest survey, 54% of EU citizens now can access 30Mbps broadband or above.

Thirty-six per cent of people have access to the internet via a portable computer or other mobile device, with access via mobile phones rising from 7% in 2008 to 27% in 2012. 4G mobile services are now available to 26% of the population.

The EU is falling short of its targets for very high-speed broadband penetration, with only 2% of homes currently subscribing to 100Mbps services and above. The EU set a target of 50% penetration by 2020.

About 22% of EU citizens have yet to use the internet, while 70% use it regularly at least once a week, up from 67% last year.
