Roku hits 5 million sales

Streaming video box-maker Roku has now shipped 5 million devices in its home market of the US since launching five years ago.

The firm, which announced the milestone figure in an official blog post, said that since May 2008 it has delivered 8 billion streams of video and music to Roku players.

The firm offers some 750 channels of content – including video services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Crackle, HBO Go and Vudu.

It also offers music services like Vevo, Pandora and Spotify and in 2011 introduced casual games with the launch of Angry Birds on the platform.

“Today, 25% of Roku players stream more than 35 hours per week to a TV,” said Roku founder and CEO Anthony Wood.

“According to Nielsen, the average American spends 34 hours per week watching live TV. That means one in four Roku customers are enjoying the vast majority of their TV time with Roku, making Roku one of the most coveted streaming platforms.”
